Shanghai is a metropolis indeed, resembling New York.

Different from Shanghai, the ancient water towns take on a classical Chinese style have won high reputation from lots of visitors. And all towns are so small that you can stroll up in 1 day, Wuzhen, Mudu, Zhouzhuang, Tongli are in the neineighborhood of Shanghai , I'm sure you will be fascinated by the elegant scenery.
References :
http://www.tourochina.com/suzhou-tours

If you can get tickets to see the Shanghai acrobats, they are considered to be the best in world, and when I went to see them, they didn't disappoint. It was an amazing show!

The Shanghai Museum is another great place to go to see Chinese historical artifacts. It's also free to enter, which makes it even more enjoyable:

If you wish to visit a nearby city, Suzhou is known for having China's best gardens (The Humble Admistrator's Garden being the most famous), and the Yunyan Pagoda (Tiger Hill Pagoda) is China's leaning tower which is older than the one in Italy. These are also great places near Shanghai.
